This took all day to write and now I can’t come up with a title.

I left a comment today on a blog that is vastly more amusing and well-written than my own and it was as I was checking back for a response and about to leave a second comment that it occurred to me maybe I should take what creative juices are flowing and spend some time here. Totally radical idea, I know. Write. On my own blog. I bet you’re wondering how I come up with such brilliance.

I spent nearly two hours with my therapist last night, talking about things I wished had never happened, coming to conclusions I'd rather not have, and generally feeling bad about myself. And, while I believe it went well, there were some ideas she opened my eyes to that left me wondering, again, if I'd have been better off not knowing.

And then she told me to get a life. It's okay. I wasn’t offended. I’ve been telling myself the same thing for a while. My whole adult life has been wrapped up in and revolving around my husband since I was eighteen. (That three-month stint of living on my own, while totally awesome, doesn’t count.)

So, she told me to get a hobby or three. Something that gets me out of the house and around (insert Jaws theme music here) OTHER PEOPLE. I looked her in the eye and asked, “don’t you know me at all?” She laughed and I considered asking for a refund.

Then she told me to create a "dream board." (Groan.) I'm sure many of you have heard of or seen these before. It's a collage of images that represent your- wait for it- dreams. In this case, I've been told to focus on where I want to be a year from now. Supposedly, having this visual reminder everyday will motivate me to put an effort into actually achieving them.

So, here's what I'm putting on mine:

I kid!

On a serious note, here's what I'd like to accomplish...

What do you think? Overly ambitious? Maybe. But I have to admit that, although I started playing with this as a joke (please don't tell my shrink), looking at those pictures causes a funny feeling in my tummy. Like maybe I want to put in the effort to make these things happen.

Or it could be I just want a cookie.

  1. Not overly ambitious at all! This post reminded me of a post I found http://www.chookooloonks.com/blog/2009/3/10/wild-authentic-intentions.html I, of course, have been too lazy to do this. But you are young and not lazy! I know you achieve big things! Keep us updated!

  5. I want to go back to the days when David Boreanaz was everyone's favorite vampire. Because I at least understood that. (My Twilight snark is inexhaustible, apparently. But look at those eyebrows! I can't take anyone with those eyebrows seriously.)Focus, AM, focus! No, your dreams are not unrealistic at all. I've been thinking about this a lot lately, and have halfway written a post about this very thing. We limit ourselves so much. Real people do those things you posted. Why shouldn't you be one of them? (And I think you can accomplish them all while still eating a cookie. Might want to be careful not to get crumbs on the camera, though.)

  6. I saw a quote yesterday that made me think of you....."You will never truly know yourself, or the strength of your relationships, until both have been tested by adversity. Such knowledge is a true gift....It is painfully won, and it has been worth more to me than any qualification I ever earned." - J.K. Rowling (2008 Harvard commencement address)Board that jet plane and let it take you where ever your heart desires. (Just let me stowaway in your bag, k'?)

  7. I'm of the mind that complete honesty is rarely a good thing, and that a perscription pad is a much more effective therapeutic tool than a dream board. But the cake--yes, that's one noble aspiration.

  8. If your posts are indicative, you are capable of great things. :=)

  9. Not overly ambitious at all. Just because it's out of your comfort zone does not classify it as 'overly ambitious'. You've chosen things that are completely do-able in 1 year if you put out the effort to do them. If you want it then go out and do it.The baking is especially simple, that's just a matter of practicing with fondant. Repetition will get you there easy peasy and if you need help there are a ton of places that give lessons, like Michaels.Photos, again repetition and then you can always reach out for help. Photoshop is rocket science but there are a ton of people on line that can help you with that and they are usually totally willing to do so.Travel, take some time off and either get in your car and drive 9you'd be amazed at what beauty this country holds. Or, if you can afford it, get on a plane. Travel right now is obscenely cheap. Take advantage of the fact that the recession is kicking the travel industries ass.Just do it, that's all it takes.

  11. I will say this: You have NO kids! Be FREE! Go see the world and take pictures of it. Eat fabulous pastries in far away places. Oh, and I want you to make me that cake for my next birthday. ;)

  12. Huh. I like what Teeter said.

  13. I love what Teeter said! Girl, you already take kick butt pictures, so keep at it. You rocked those cake bites of PW's. I totally ruined my batch. Go travel, while you are still without kids, young and carefree. Your goals are very doable!

  14. cog, my apologies. I'll work on it. Alias Mother, the only reason I ever watched Buffy was DAVID BOREANAZ. He was gorgeous. Please don't ask me to choose between him and Edward Cullen. I just can't make that choice.MichelleSG, getting out of my comfort zone could be considered overly ambitious for me. Scary. But I appreciate the vote of confidence. And, yes, I am painfully aware of the sad state of the hospitality industry every time I go to work. Sigh.

  15. Go for it Steph!! No kids, not ties. Tour - maybe you'll bump into Edward Cullen! Then, come back home and starting practicing your baking. You'll get it eventually. Like DVM's Wife said, your photos are already great but if you're not happy with them, just keep experimenting!

  16. I need to branch out more, too. It's a hard thing to do, I think - what to do? how much does it cost? where to do it? will I look stupid? (actually, I don't worry much about that last one - heh.) Soooo many excuses! I am determined, however, to become a more interesting person - and that means that I need to be involved in things that interest me.Baking, photography, and travel are obviously things that interest you - Go! DO! And then tell us how exciting and fulfilling it is.(And hopefully I'll be doing the same thing.)

  17. I don't know I think you should keep Edward on it! I think it is a good idea to have a dream board. I might have to make one for myself.
