I'm broke, but it's awesome. A poverty update.

Yesterday I signed up with Mint.com.

Today I received this e-mail:

Proceed with caution, indeed.

Normally, this would be enough to make me wet myself, but I'm happy to announce my pants are dry (if maybe a bit too snug). $29 left to my name and I'm totally calm and collected. So much that I'm going to sit back with this bag of Starbursts (which I suckered my mom into buying) (and which certainly isn't helping the fit of my clothing) and relish in my new found financial prowess.

Okay, "prowess" might be a stretch, but I feel as if I've accomplished more in just a few short days than I have in the last ten years. How, you ask? Well, let me tell you. I increased my profit sharing from 6% to 10% (because I have no reason not to save more) (and I'd be a complete moron not to), I sent $600 to both my car loan and credit card, and I have a budget. A real, live, grown-up budget. One I plan on sticking to.

And this morning, when my mom asked if I wanted to run to Staples with her, I said yes and LEFT MY DEBIT CARD AT HOME. And thank God I did 'cause I could have easily dropped my remaining $29 in unnecessary office supplies.

I love office supplies.

But I love not feeling guilty more.

Peeps, thanks for your help. Now if only you could tell me what to do about this little (huge!) candy problem I seem to have...

  1. Perhaps I need to pass on the "mint" information to my oldest daughter....she could use some caution signs sometimes.

  4. Yay. go you! It is refreshing isn't it? You didn't need those office supplies anyway and they will be there still later when, you know, you've won the lottery right? Keep it up!

  5. Woo-hoo! Right on! Way to not spend money! And if it takes a few bags of candy to get you through this, so be it. One issue at a time, ok?

  6. That's great! If the candy fits within your budget, it's not a problem, right?

  7. I'm with Violet. One thing at a time. Let's not go crazy now, okay?(Good work. Keep going. Are you a visual person? If so, you may want to make a chart showing how you will be paying down your debt and boosting your savings each month. If you need that sort of thing, it's very soothing.)

It IS refreshing. And you're right... I so didn't need the office supplies. Why pay for 'em when I can get 'em from work for free? (I kid, I kid!)

It's too bad there isn't a site like this for relationships.

Hi Michele, glad you stopped by... And glad you said something about the gift card. I hope they find it when they get settled.

One thing at a time? I don't get it. Visual is good... but I think I'd prefer a big jar of cash over a chart. Ya know?

  15. that's a big motivator in my world: no dollas for new duds, so you gotta curb the foods. Can you get yourself addicted to a walk every night instead??

  18. Yea....she could use one of those too ~ but I'm being good and keeping my mouth shut about that! I know the quickest way to make a guy more attractive is for your mother to tell you something is wrong with him. :)
